Happy Belated New Year!  The first few weeks of January we were resting and re-grouping, but now things are back in full swing.  Yes, people are already thinking about that next gift-gifting occasion, Valentine’s Day.

Etsy is an excellent resource for handmade cards, candies, jewelry, bath and body and more!  So this year, instead of hitting the mall for something mass-produced, why not get your loved one something handmade from the heart?  Here are our selections from some talented artists:

For your daughter, your best friend or best girl…

Garnet Red Heart Earrings by KatieBelle Design

For your wife or girlfriend…

Gold Hearts and Silver Hoop Earrings by Cheydrea

For that someone truly special…

Fabric Flower Necklace by Little Blue Studio

***And, of course, we think bath and body products make a great Valentines gift!  Here are some of our Becca & Mars favorites!***

Our brand new organic foot scrub, made with turbinado sugar, sea salt, sweet almond oil, vitamin E, and the essential oils of Peppermint and Rosemary

Sweet Feet Organic Foot Scrub by Becca & Mars

Or, an earthy sexy scent for both men and women, Sugar and Spice

Sugar and Spice 2-Piece Bath and Body Gift Set

And so we leave you with this:

We’re all a little weird.  And life is a little weird.  And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall into mutually satisfying weirdness – and call it love – true love.  ~Robert Fulghum, True Love

Cheers!

What a busy time this has been! On December 2 we joined several other local vendors at Candle Off Main’s 3rd Annual Holiday Blitz. It was a fun event filled with jewelry, wood crafts, handbags, awesome food and drink and candles, candles, candles. Really, if you haven’t been to Candles Off Main go there now. The selection is astonishing. www.candlesoffmain.com
On December 9 we were at a Holiday Open House hosted by our friend, Molly. Every year Molly opens her home to local entrepreneurial women to sell their (our) wares – we met jewelry makers and sellers, candle sellers, a specialty food seller and were introduced to a fellow Etsy member who makes beautiful stationery. Molly feeds us and keeps us in coffee, tea and hot chocolate. She also hires a babysitter who attends to the children in the well-appointed playroom. Now, Molly is a brave soul for hosting this event, but the babysitter? She deserves some kind of medal. There are hoards of children at various times throughout the event, and most of them are hopped up on sugar from the treats they swipe on their way to the playroom. A good time was had by all, and I had to bribe and then drag my kid out of there.

Prime spot in front of the fireplace

Goodies!

Erica - looking fabulous!

Thanks to Sue at Candles Off Main and to Molly and her intrepid Mom for two terrific events!
And our new Etsy friend, Kari, can be found here. Her stationery is gorgeous! www.etsy.com/shop/austinwaynedesigns

Bought this card from Kari of Austin Wayne Designs!

Can you even believe Hanukkah, Christmas and Winter Solstice are almost here!? We’re filling orders like mad. Thanks for all your support! Remember to place your Becca & Mars order by the dates below to help ensure arrival before your celebrations commence!
Hanukkah – US Destinations: DEC 13, 2011
Christmas – US Destinations: DEC 18, 2011

As we pass mid-October and move into late-October many of us are aware that Breast Cancer Awareness month is drawing to a close.  We are more acutely aware of this dreaded disease than ever before, thanks to the efforts of many public awareness and medical organizations and government agencies.   The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month organization is over 25 years old and promotes breast cancer awareness, education, and empowerment.  You can find them here, not only in October, but also throughout the year http://www.nbcam.org

Baltimore Etsy Street Team (BEST for short) members have joined the effort to reach out to our community, promote awareness and help make the day-to-day lives of breast cancer patients a little easier.  BEST team members have created pasties using many different mediums, including felt, beads, metal, ceramic, feathers, sugar… The list goes on and on – we’re a diverse group.  You can peruse and purchase our creations here: www.etsy.com/shop/BEST4breasts

And, check this out – here is what we at Becca & Mars created.  Sweet! Literally, we used sugar, but please don’t eat the pasties!

All proceeds collected from the BEST for Breasts sale will be donated to the Red Devils, a Maryland organization that funds services to improve the quality of life for breast cancer patients and their families.  You can find this worthy organization here:

This fall allergies have been tough on our families, our friends, and us.  Even people who normally do not complain of allergy symptoms – puffy, watery eyes, headache, congestion, sneezing – have been caught by surprise by the severity and frequency of their allergy attacks.  I’ve been combating allergy symptoms for years in myself, my husband, and in my two sons. Sometimes a prescription or over-the-counter medicine is necessary, such as when I’ve been so congested I thought I might suffocate in my sleep (dramatic, no?), but I’ve been using the following essential oils and methods with very good results.

There are several essential oils that are effective in treating allergy symptoms by clearing the respiratory system and easing breathing.

  • Eucalyptus – There are several varieties of eucalyptus, all of which have a crisp, camphoraceous aroma.  The eucalyptus radiata variety is the most effective in easing congestion.
  • Peppermint has a pleasant, sharp, minty aroma that we’re all familiar with.
  • Blue Tansy – this essential oil is expensive, but is highly regarded in treating allergy symptoms as well as asthma symptoms.  It has a lovely, sweet floral aroma and is a beautiful deep blue color.  Beautiful, yes, but it can also stain – use carefully.
  • Clove Bud is my six-year-old’s favorite, as it not only helps him feel better, but he also finds the aroma comforting.  It has a warm, spicy aroma, just like the cloves you may have in your spice collection.

There are also many methods to try depending on what is most convenient for you.

  • Place 5-10 drops of essential oil in your electric or candle-powered diffuser. Remember to blow out your candles before you go to bed!
  • Place 8-10 drops of essential oil onto each one of a few cotton balls and place them on the windowsills at night (out of reach of small children and pets).
  • Drop a few drops of oil onto a light bulb while the light is on and before you go to bed.  The heat from the light bulb will diffuse the oil into the air.
  • Add 15 drops of essential oil to an ounce of carrier oil such as jojoba, apricot kernel, coconut or sweet almond.  Allow the oils to meld for approximately 24 hours, and then use the oil as a chest rub.
  • Add 4-8 drops of oil into a bowl of steaming hot water.  Lean your face over the bowl with a towel over your head (like a tent) and breathe in.
  • Add 6-8 drops of essential oil to the water in your humidifier.  First refer to your humidifier’s manufacturer’s instructions and only use this method in a humidifier that is designed for use with essential oils!

Try Becca & Mars Winter Night Pure Essential Oil Blend and Winter Night Bath Oil, which contain clove bud as well as bergamot, ginger, orange and lemon.  It’s warm, comforting, delicious, and may even help you breathe easier. Hopefully, whatever is causing so many of us to suffer from the dreaded allergy symptoms will fade away soon as the weather gets colder.  Then it’ll be cold and flu season!  Fear not, for these essential oils and methods are also helpful for those dreaded symptoms.

Be well,

Steff and Erica

64 degrees here today, and Steff and I couldn’t be happier about it!  Time to pull out the sweaters.  We love everything about Fall; the weather, the smells, the colors, the food.  The kids are back to school, we’re watching the pumpkins crop up and thinking about Halloween costumes.  Erica is watching football; Steff is not. ;)

To say goodbye to summer, Summer Hand Candy Packages are 10% off today through the 22nd.  Treat yourself, or start stocking up for the Holidays.

We’re also welcoming our latest retail location, With Gratitude!  A fantastic Baltimore gift store located at 6907 York Rd in Baltimore.  Well worth visiting!

And remember, tomorrow we’ll be at Zappafest in Highlandtown.  We are very excited for what looks like a very fun day.

We leave you with thoughts of Fall.
